What did I learn about online dating?

Fun, fabulous and 40!

On the beach in St. Maarten.

You gotta have fun with it. New to the online dating scene, I went into it with an open mind. I wanted to have fun and meet new people, yet I also knew I wanted to find someone special. Keeping it light, I used the screen name Funfab40 on my Match.com profile.

I posted a few photos (a head shot, and a couple photos of me being active, skiing and hiking) and a brief profile.  Then I decided to let the men come to me. I received more than two dozen emails or "winks" of interest that first week. (A wink on Match.com displays a little winking eye icon. It's a quick way for a person to express interest without writing an email.)

Within my first two weeks online, Darrell sent me an email, and we struck up an online conversation using match's double blind email system. The double blind system means that your emails are sent through the online dating website and your personal email address is masked. Your email address is kept private and it does not show in the to/from boxes. There's more on safety in our FAQs and Safety tips.

Take your time to get to know one another...

At a friend's wedding.

Progressing through the communication channels.
I felt safe using this email system as it maintained my privacy. After taking some time to get to know one another via email, we then moved to the telephone. I didn't feel comfortable giving out my phone number, so I asked him if he would. Darrell emailed me his phone number and left it up to me to call. A couple days later, I called him from my cell phone, not my home phone. I liked having the option to call him, which made me feel more in control of how our communication progressed.

Once on the phone, we chatted easily for several minutes; he had a genuineness to his voice, which I liked. I think you can tell a lot about a person over the phone through their tone of voice and attitude. After a few phone calls and more emails, we made a date to meet in person after Christmas 2004.

We met at a local restaurant about a month after our initial email. We clicked immediately, and we both knew right away that we wanted to see more of each other. And so began the courtship of Marilyn and Darrell and the start of the four season rule.
