Why am I doing this?

Hoping to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about online dating...

I created this website to help dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about online dating. Over the last few years, I believe the stigma surrounding online dating has lessened somewhat; however, to some degree it still exists.

I am a graduate student at the College of Saint Rose, and have been researching computer-mediated communication, specifically focusing on online dating, for the past three and a half years. It was a result of this initial research that I overcame my own preconceived notions and reservations about online dating. I decided to turn the experiment onto myself and I actually went online to find a potential romantic partner.

At the time I was 40 years old, divorced with a teenage son, recently back on the dating scene. I was tired of the bar scene, knowing it wasn't the appropriate venue to meet someone. I had asked friends and colleagues for set ups, and was not having much luck with "blind dates." I even tried speed dating twice to no avail. Ready for something new, I decided to give online dating a try after reading Rachel Greenwald's book, Find A Husband After 35 (Using What I Learned at Harvard Business School): A Simple 15-Step Action Program.

Even after much research and preparation, when I told people (my friends, family and co-workers) that I met my then boyfriend, who is now my husband, online some of them looked at me in disbelief. A few more were shocked, if not indignant. They insisted that online dating was the bastion for lonely, desperate people, and that it certainly couldn't be a safe place to meet someone. I emphatically disagreed, and wondered to myself, how can this stigma still exist in 2005 and beyond? Online dating has been around essentially since 1995, with more than a dozen years of continued success, why are these negative perceptions still prevailing? It has now become my mission to set the naysayers straight.

The aim of this site is to showcase online dating success stories with the hope that as more positive stories are revealed, the more likely that the general public (and those naysayers) will alter their negative perceptions of online dating to a more positive reality.

After all, in the 21st Century, it is my opinion -- as well as other scholars and researchers -- that the Internet is just another place to meet and make new friends. I hope you find this website to be useful. Go to the contact section and let me know what you think.
